INVESTIGATION - Understand the operation of the process or machine in question and determine the operational challenges and the business impact on production operations.

EXPLORATION - Outline the operators' requirements, identifying potential solutions, discussing alternatives, identifying an approach, and agreeing on the personnel needed to tackle the problem.

DESIGN - Defining a Functional Specification to describe the desired operation from the user's perspective; completing tasks to define and document the system details.

DEVELOPMENT - This is the step engineers live for; putting everything together and making it work. From DCS configuration to HMI screen development to database configuration and report generation it all gets done in this step.

IMPLEMENTATION - This step involves testing, installing and commissioning. From the Factory Acceptance Test to project completion.
